I chose this photograph for three reasons.

jg full.jpg

First, it shows me communicating emphatically. (Quick tip: Hand gestures are a good thing when they convey conviction. Movements that convey nervousness or apprehension aren't.) I believe in what I do and the people for whom I do it.

Second, I remember the setting and the story I was telling about innovations my organization helped launch. I've lived nearly all of my professional life at the intersection of expanding opportunity to more Americans and telling stories. I've written award-winning newspaper pieces and helped some of the nation's most effective non-profits find their voice. I've run communications for a large, complex  organization (the nation's fourth largest school system) and led a start-up business past its revenue targets by 10 percent in under a year. I understand client service from helping grow a Washington public affairs firm of four employees to 17 and from paying consultants myself.

Third, research shows that whether it's a tweet, a blog post or a presentation, the right graphic or photo makes content more memorable.
